July 22nd - National Hammock Day

Is there ever any reason to not enjoy a nice relaxing afternoon in the sun gently swinging back and forth in the wind? Well if you ever needed an excuse to get away from the family and just be at peace for a few moments, today you have the best excuse possible. That's because July 22nd is "National Hammock Day". And even if most of your memories of hammocks are of being spun around as far possible while hanging on for dear life through the little string holes or waking up with a deep checkered pattern on your face that seemingly lasts for days, they're still a lot better times then doing yard work or hanging with your in laws. So grab a nice cool glass of lemonade, a magazine or your iPad and just enjoy a few moments to yourself.

The hammock is said to have been originated by Native Americans at the time of the Spanish Conquest. Early hammocks were woven out of bark from a hamack tree and later switched to sisal fibers because of its abundance. Hammocks provided protection from animals and insects, particularly snakes and biting ants, by suspending the beds above between two trees above the ground. Hammocks were then introduced to Europe by Christopher Columbus who brought several back to Spain after seeing their use by the Native Americans. There are no known origins as to the very first "National Hammock Day", but in all honesty you should try and make every day during the dog days of summer a hammock day.

With so many varieties of hammocks to choose from, you really can't go wrong celebrating. Whether it's a net or canvas hammock strung between two trees, a portable hammock you can put pretty much anywhere, or a banana hammock that you should wear proud no matter how many people stare, this day is all about getting you to just chill out. So make the best of it, pour yourself a cold one and make sure you provided enough support for yourself so you don't crash to the ground mid nap...

Don't have a hammock? Then why not make your very own following these simple instructions below with minimum materials and time. Just don't fall like this dude.
