July 11th - National Cheer Up The Lonely Day

July 11th is officially "National Cheer Up The Lonely Day". So how can you celebrate such a depressingly themed holiday you might ask? Well that's easy, if you are a happy, outgoing and cheerful person, then why not spread that good vibe with those around you. As they say, happiness is infectious (along with a few other things that we won't discuss here), so why not share it with the people who aren't. If there is someone in your family, a friend you've lost touch with or even an elderly person or someone in your neighborhood who looks like they could use a little cheering up, why not spend 5 minutes with them. You never know how much of an impact such a small gesture can have on both of you. Or if you're not exactly the type, just take a buddy out for a beer or go shopping with your girlfriends if that suits you more. The effort makes all the difference.

National Cheer Up The Lonely Day was said to have been created by Francis Pesek in Detroit, Michigan. Always the quiet kind with a compassionate heart, Francis got the idea as a way of promoting kindenss towards others who were lonely, introverts, stuck in nursing homes with no relatives or friends, or those who may have lost loved ones close to them. He chose July 11th to be "National Cheer Up The Lonely Day" because it was his birthday.

So it's pretty simple really, take some time out and spread some cheer with those around you who need it. The lasting effects could be monumental...

If all else fails, then just play a little "Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin to brighten up the day.
