Probably the least appreciated and most poked fun at branch of the military is the Coast Guard, and incorrectly so. For anyone who has ever watched an episode of Deadliest Catch and has seen a crabbing trip gone bad, they always know that the boys in orange will be doing all they can to swoop down in the rough seas and risk life and limb to save somebody that they have never met before in their life. Still think it's an easy job? Of course not, and that is why August 4th is "National Coast Guard Day".
The U.S. Coast Guard was created on August 4th, 1790 when the Revenue Cutter Service was created by the U.S. Congress. Congress then authorized the construction of ten cutter ships, which were built to enforce U.S. tariff laws. The Revenue Cutter Service was the early version of the U.S. Coast Guard, which officially got the name "Coast Guard" in 1915. "National Coast Guard Day" does not have any official origins, but any profession that risks it all in order to save a life or two deserves their own day regardless of whether or not it is nationally recognized.
So whether you know somebody in the Coast Guard, would like to join the Coast Guard or just really enjoy swimming in the ocean or watching Deadliest Catch, make sure to thank all of those who wait on call in order to make the waters safe for all of us adventure goers. And if you really want to show your appreciation, drive a ship out into the middle of nowhere, jump off and wait for the Coast Guard to rescue you so you can personally thank them. I'm kidding of course, just bake them a cake or some cookies instead...
