August 3rd - National Watermelon Day

I bet I know who really enjoys celebrating "National Watermelon Day". Yeah you know who I'm talking about. I'm talking about everybody. That's right, cause even if you don't like the delicious fruity nectar of this refreshing summer snack, you can still spit the seeds at all the people you don't like and play it off like you were just trying to not swallow the seeds. There are hardly any other foods and no other fruits in which spitting is not only acceptable but completely encouraged and that is why we celebrate August 3rd for being "National Watermelon Day".

Watermelons are thought to have originated in southern Africa where it is found growing in the wild. Although evidence of the watermelon's cultivation was found in the Nile Valley of Egypt as early as second millennium BC with watermelon seeds even being found at the tomb site of King Tut. Watermelon is also mentioned as being eaten by ancient Israelites in the Bible during the time when they were in bondage with Egypt. There is no official origin of the first "National Watermelon Day", but I would like to think that it was started by King Tut who often enjoyed watermelon after his large feasts and would have regular seed spitting contests with his advisers.

So what are you waiting for? Go buy some watermelon and have some watermelon eating contests, speed sitting contests, or even better, inject it with vodka and let the real party start. And if you are not a fan of the seeds, you can always buy a seedless watermelon, but that just takes all of the fun out of it. Just in case you were wondering too, the Guinness Book of World Record distance for a watermelon seed spit is 68 feet 9 and 1/8 inches held by Lee Wheelis in 1989.

And if you need any pointers on how to properly eat a watermelon, just let Petey Greene show you how in his tell all video on "How To Eat A Watermelon".
